Field note

Logging existed; observability did not

A logging setting and access records did not establish that the important production behaviors were observable.

Method Change

How the claim changed

Belief

If logging is enabled and integration tests show access logs, production behavior should be observable enough to diagnose failures.

Evidence

Durable logging existed and test environments emitted the expected access records.

Contradiction

Production evidence showed that an embedded metrics server could reset process-wide logging configuration. A later seam audit found important behaviors remained weakly observed.

Correction

Treat observability as coverage of the behavior being investigated, not as a boolean logging setting. Instrument the actual failure seams and verify them under production-like conditions.

Current claim boundary

“Logging is enabled” is not evidence that the relevant behavior is observable.

Public evidence

No direct public artifact supports the earlier logging-reset finding, so this curated note does not fabricate an evidence link.
