Rocket Tool Sketcher

Parametric rocket-tooling drawings and manufacturing export bundles in the browser.

Case summary

Purpose

I wanted the original tooling formulas to be immediately usable while preserving a controlled path to manufacturing-ready exports.

System

Rocket Tool Sketcher is a browser-based designer for spindle and rammer tooling. It turns tube size and manufacturing tolerances into an annotated drawing and downloadable review/CAD artifacts.

Contribution

Product flow, parametric geometry/tolerance behavior, browser-to-export service boundary, manufacturing artifact acceptance criteria, and deployment verification.

Design-to-artifact flow

Geometry and export generation are deterministic; the service boundary keeps CAD generation behind the deployed application.

Problem

  • Tooling formulas are useful only when they are easy to inspect and turn into manufacturing artifacts.
  • Export services should remain behind the deployed application boundary.

Technical Highlights

  • Interactive spindle and rammer drawings
  • Preset/custom sizing in inches or millimetres
  • Manufacturing tolerances and clearance checks
  • PDF, DXF, STEP, STL, OpenSCAD, and JSON export artifacts
  • Python CAD exporter behind the web application

System Design

  • React/TypeScript designer creates a validated tooling model in the browser.
  • Nginx proxies only export requests to the internal Python CAD service.
  • Jenkins runs tests, browser smoke checks, and deployment.

Deterministic Authority

  • Tooling formulas, tolerances, validation, and export generation

Where Models Fit

  • No model is required for the core design/export workflow.

Trust, Failure & Recovery

  • Export API is not independently exposed as a public service.
